I'm still figuring mine out as I go. I used to buy anything I liked in stores or thought was on trend, but over time, a pile of clothes started to build up at the back of my closet, never worn with the tags still on. In order to declutter, I decided to be very selective when it came to shopping. The first step was to make a list of things I would like to reflect in my wardrobe. I wrote down the colors I liked (mostly neutrals & blush pink) as well as the kind of fabrics & patterns I thought would suit me, that would transition well from one season to another, pieces that be suitable for more than one occasion & mix well together. I also went through Pinterest endlessly, creating boards of outfits & silhouettes I liked. At the moment, I'm all about blush pink! My wardrobe mostly consisted of blacks and whites, which I felt got too predictable after a while. So I kept an eye out for the perfect pinks & managed to find and collect some beautiful pieces. As you might have noticed on my instagram feed lately, the blushes & pinks have been taking over... with more to come. I posted previously about a pair of high waisted, wide leg pants on a whim at a Zara sale. (check out the post here) I never thought past low rise skinnies but I was very surprised how good the pants looked! I think a good pair of well made wide-leg, high-waisted pants could look flattering on anyone. They elongate your legs (even if you're short, you can pair them with some heels or wedges hidden under the hem). My waistline is a bit wider than I'd prefer (I've been carrying around a food baby ever since I can remember, coz I can't cut back on carbs!) these pants also give the illusion of a cinched waist, specially with a loose top tucked in. A friend of mine said she doesn't think she could pull these off as she has skinny hips, but I beg to differ because despite one's body type or size, I believe these pants would look help achieve an elegant, polished look. Also, they're great in summer, so you don't have any fabric sticking to your legs in the heat or when you get out of the pool/beach after a swim. So I encourage you to try new silhouettes and see what works for your body type till you find it. Experiment with colors, patterns & fabrics. Try out new stores that you (or anyone else) has never been to before. Cultivate your own signature style, regardless of what might be trending at the moment. You will be surprised by how much you have been missing out.
